6:23, 24. John explains how the people came to meet Jesus at Capernaum. “Tiberias” was a Roman-built city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. This is the only mention of the city in the Bible. Tiberias was Herod Antipas’ capital. It was considered a Gentile city; therefore, Jesus never ministered there (Matthew 15:24). Small boats came from Tiberias to the eastern shore, where Jesus fed the multitude. “When the people therefore saw” explains why the people took passage in the little boats.
